Elk Country is home to the Largest Wild Elk Herd in the Northeastern United States!

With Autumn fast approaching, the long-awaited mating season for Pennsylvania’s wild elk is upon us. These magnificent creatures, numbering about 1000, roam freely throughout the year in Elk and Cameron counties. However, it’s during the ‘rut’ or mating season (September and October) that these great creatures put on a show. With an overall height of 9ft and weighing almost 1000 pounds, these domineering land mammals are thrilling to watch as they prepare to mate.
Your best opportunity to see this spectacular show is just after day light or at dusk. Listen for the high-pitched bulge of the bull (male elk) signaling others that he is claiming his territory and calling for his harem (group of females). With any luck, you may see ferocious clashes between two bulls in their attempt to claim territory and control each other’s harems.
For an up close view of the elk, we strongly recommend you visit Winslow Hill viewing area, Dents Run viewing area (a short distance north of Winslow Hill) and the Elk Country Visitor Center – in Benezette, PA. All are located in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds and provide unique opportunities to view the elk and wildlife indigenous to the region. Things to bring on your visit include: binoculars, camera, and a chair.
